Researching Emerging Assisted Reproduction Markets in Southern Africa

This interdisciplinary study across anthropology and public health focuses upon the mobilities of patients to Southern Africa for assisted reproduction treatment (ART) and mobility of ova providers, gametes, embryos and medical staff across Africa and to and from Australia.

In September and October 2022, a period of fieldwork was undertaken in South Africa by Chief investigator Prof. Andrea Whittaker from Monash University together with Associate Prof. Trudie Gerrits from the University of Amsterdam. Prof Whittaker and Prof Gerrits joined Prof. Lenore Manderson (Monash University and the University of the Witwatersrand) as well as Dr. Tessa Moll (the University of the Witwatersrand) in South Africa. Site visits were conducted with 9 clinics in the region and partnerships with collaborators were set up.
